The 9 Settings That Turn Claude Into Your Team

Out of the box, Claude is a smart chatbot. Change nine settings and it starts behaving like someone on your team: it remembers you, reaches into your tools, and gets on with recurring work without being asked twice. Here's the exact list, in the order to tackle them.

Most people sign up for Claude, ask it a few questions, get a decent answer, and stop there. That's a perfectly reasonable way to use a chatbot. It is a terrible way to judge whether Claude can actually help run your business, because almost everything that makes it useful for that is switched off by default.

The gap isn't the model, it's the setup. Turn on the right settings, in the right order, and the exact same tool goes from "answers my questions" to "remembers my business, reaches into my inbox and calendar, and gets on with the recurring stuff without me asking twice." Here are the nine that matter, and the order I'd tackle them in.

1. The right model for the job

Claude isn't one model, it's a small family: a fast one for quick answers, a balanced one that handles most day-to-day work, and a most-powerful one for the hard, high-stakes stuff like strategy or anything with real financial or legal weight. Which one you're on changes both the quality of the answer and how fast you get it.

Tip: Default to the balanced model. Only reach for the top-tier one when the task genuinely demands it. Leaving the heaviest model on for everyday chat is the single most common way people burn through their usage limit early.

2. Extended thinking

Alongside the model picker there's a thinking toggle that makes Claude reason through a problem step by step before it gives you the final answer, instead of responding immediately. For anything with several moving parts (a pricing decision, a plan with dependencies, a tricky bit of analysis) turning this on noticeably improves the quality of what comes back.

3. Memory

By default, Claude forgets everything the moment you close the chat. Turn memory on and it starts carrying your context forward: your business, your voice, the decisions you've already made, so you stop re-explaining yourself in every new conversation. Of every setting on this list, this is the one that most changes how "generic" Claude feels day to day. I've written a full walkthrough of setting up AI memory properly if you want to do this one right.

Claude can search the live web when a question needs current information rather than general knowledge. It's off by default in some contexts, so if you've ever gotten a vague or out-of-date answer, check whether search was actually switched on for that conversation before you blame the model.

5. Artifacts

This is the most underused setting on the list. With Artifacts on, you can ask Claude to build something (a calculator, a simple dashboard, an intake form) and it creates a real, working version right there that you can use and keep tweaking by asking. It turns "I should really get someone to build me a quick tool for this" into a five-minute conversation.

6. Your profile ("about you")

There's a spot in settings to tell Claude who you are once: your role, your business, how you like answers delivered. Fill it in and every new chat starts already knowing the basics, instead of you typing the same three sentences of context at the top of every conversation.

7. Response style

Claude can answer in different styles: a default conversational tone, a more concise version that skips the preamble, a more formal one, and so on. If you find Claude's default tone too padded or too casual for how you communicate, this is the setting that fixes it in one click rather than asking it to change tone every single time.

8. Connectors

Connectors plug Claude into the tools you already run your business on: Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Notion, Slack and others. Once connected, you can ask it things like "what's on my calendar tomorrow" or "which emails haven't I replied to" directly, instead of copying and pasting information in by hand.

9. Scheduled tasks

The last one is the one that turns Claude from something you have to remember to open into something that just runs. Set a task to repeat on a schedule (every morning, every Monday) and it works in the background and delivers the result, no prompting required. Start with one small recurring task before you schedule everything at once.

The order matters

If you only do three of these today, do them in this order: memory first, so Claude stops forgetting who you are. Your profile second, so it has the context to act on. Connectors third, so it has something real to act on. The rest compound from there.

None of this requires switching to a different plan or paying for anything extra beyond what most people already have. It's nine toggles you've probably scrolled past in Settings without a second look.

Once these nine are on, the natural next step is figuring out what to actually point Claude at. If you haven't already, run a free AI time audit of your week to find the first task worth handing over.

FAQ

Where do I find these settings in Claude?

Almost all of them live under Settings in the Claude app: model and thinking sit near the message box, while memory, your profile, response style, web search, Artifacts, connectors and scheduled tasks are grouped under the main Settings menu. Exact menu names shift occasionally as Claude updates, but the settings themselves are stable.

Do I need a paid plan to use all nine settings?

Some, like model choice, thinking, web search and Artifacts, are available broadly. Others, like connectors and scheduled tasks, depend on your plan and which app you're using (web chat versus the desktop app). Check your account's plan details if a setting you're looking for isn't showing up.

Which setting makes the biggest difference for a small business owner?

Memory, without much competition. It's the single change that stops Claude feeling like a stranger every time you open a new chat, because it carries your context, your business and your voice forward automatically.

How long does it take to set all nine up?

About fifteen minutes if you do it in one sitting: a couple of minutes each for memory and your profile, then quick toggles for the rest. It's a one-time setup, not something you redo per conversation.
